Acrobat's not the program you want to handle a tricky PDF with an embedded font, like this list of contributors to Gov. Jan Brewer's border fence project. It failed two different ways using two different methods.
In our initial run-through, we ran the document through the normal spreadsheet conversion. The 1,052-page mammoth took about 15 minutes to process, but the result was nothing but garbled, random characters. Even the formatting was messy. Acrobat does have an OCR feature (which was enabled when we ran the conversion), but because the data is already technically text, it didn't do much good.
That's why we tried splitting the task into pieces, first converting the document into separate images, combining them and running the PDF-to-spreadsheet conversion one more time. No go here either. After 30 minutes, the program threw a generic error proclaiming the "save as" function failed.
The result was similar when we broke the size down to 50 pages. After 30 minutes, the document had still failed to process completely, and appeared hung up on one of the steps.
